| KEEPING
YOUR PC IN GOOD HEALTH |
|
1. Windows updates are essential, please follow this link to
Microsoft's
update page |
| Be
sure to install all "critical updates". |
|
|
Windows XP users can set their PC to update automatically by doing the
following: |
click:
|
click: |
double click: |
|
click on: Automatic Updates |
 |
|
|
configure similar to below and click "apply" then "ok" |
 |
|
| If
your pc is not on during scheduled time, Windows will update next time you
go online. |
| |
|
2. Use antivirus software and update it frequently. We recommend
Norton's Antivirus |
|
manufactured by Symantec. It can be purchased at Walmart for $44.96 |
be sure to activate the "live update"
option |
|
There are several free antivirus software programs available but do not
work as well and |
| we
do not feel it is worth the risk. If you must, try
AVG |
| |
|
3. Firewall software will stop annoying and destructive pop-ups. Many
people |
|
unknowingly click no on pop-ups and it still means yes. This installs
data-mining |
|
software which takes control of your browser. Several companies such as
zonealarm |
|
offer free software which work adequately. |
 |
|
Should you want to check your pc for data-mining (also known as spyware)
programs |
| (and
remove them) download a free copy of
AdAware 6.0. It's free and you will be |
|
amazed at what it finds. |
| |
|
4. Do not download software games or applications from an unreputable
source. |
|
Applications like "weather bug" or "gator" can ruin your PC. |
| |
| By
following the instructions above you will help protect your pc from
possible damage |
| and
save you a considerable amount of time and money in the future. |
| |
|
Practice "safe surfing" and enjoy the internet ! |
